Family-Friendly Activities in Mammoth Lakes

Spring Family Activities

Spring is one of the most underrated times to visit Mammoth Lakes with kids. The mountain stays open through Memorial Day weekend and often into June, so families can ski or ride in the morning and explore the town in the afternoon.

Lower trails start opening up as the snow retreats, wildflowers push up through the meadows, and the lakes begin to thaw. It’s a great time to visit before the summer crowds arrive, and lodging is easier to book with a more relaxed pace around town.

Summer Family Activities

Summer in Mammoth Lakes puts an enormous range of family activities within easy reach. Hike easy trails to alpine lakes in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, ride the Panorama Gondola to the 11,053-ft summit of Mammoth Mountain, or kayak on Lake Mary with the granite peaks reflected in the water below.

The paved Lakes Basin Path is a favorite for families on bikes, a gentle, scenic ride accessible to all ages and abilities. Kids also love Woolly’s Adventure Summit for the mountain coaster and climbing wall, the Volcom Brothers Skatepark for a change of pace, and the swimming pool at Whitmore Pool for a slower afternoon.

Hiking and biking with kids are easiest to plan using our dedicated guides to family hiking and family biking. For something different, our guides also cover horseback riding, rock climbing, camping and fishing with kids.

Fall Family Activities

Fall brings some of the most spectacular scenery of the year to Mammoth Lakes. The aspens turn gold along McGee Canyon, Lake George and Convict Lake, making even a short drive or easy walk a memorable experience for kids.

Hiking trails stay open well into October, the lakes are calm and uncrowded, and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable days on the trail. Fall is also a great time for wildlife spotting: mule deer are active at lower elevations and birds are moving through on their southward migration. As always, plan ahead, park smart, tread lightly, stay aware of changing conditions, and pack out everything you bring in.

Mammoth Mountain runs dedicated beginner terrain and ski school programs for kids starting at age three, making it one of the best mountains in California for introducing young skiers and riders to the sport. Our guides to family skiing at Mammoth Mountain and family skiing at June Mountain cover trip planning for both.

Off the slopes, families enjoy family-friendly snowshoeing trails through the forest, sledding areas close to town, and ice skating at the LA Kings Ice. The free town shuttle makes it easy to get around without a car, so you can cover more ground with less hassle.

Day Trip Ideas

Looking to explore beyond town for a day? The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is home to some of the oldest trees on Earth, with trails suited to different ages and energy levels, about a two-hour drive from Mammoth Lakes. Closer in, Mono Lake offers tufa formations, easy nature trails, and guided walks, all within about an hour’s drive.

Plan by Age

Not sure where to start? Toddlers do best with short, flat outings like the Lakes Basin Path or Whitmore Pool. School-age kids are ready for real trails, horseback riding, and beginner ski lessons. Teens tend to gravitate toward the gondola, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Our seasonal guides above call out age-appropriate options throughout.

Before You Go
