Convict Lake
Overview
Convict Lake sits in a classic U-shaped glacial valley. Its steep walls and deep blue waters reveal the power of Ice Age glaciers that once filled this canyon. The surrounding cliffs expose some of the oldest rocks in the region - metamorphic formations more than 350 million years old, originally deposited as ancient coral reefs and shell beds on a shallow tropical sea floor. Glaciers advanced through the canyon roughly 15,000 to 25,000 years ago, scouring the bedrock and depositing a terminal moraine that naturally dammed the valley and formed the lake seen today!
