One of the best things about visiting Mammoth Lakes with a dog is that you don't need a car once you're here — the Town's free public transit is genuinely dog-friendly.
Mammoth Transit System (Free, Town-wide)
Dogs are welcome on the fixed local routes as long as they're leashed and muzzled, or carried in a cage,Town has this rule in place for the safety and comfort of other riders and dogs. The single exception is the Bike Park Shuttle, which doesn't allow dogs. Because policy can vary by route and season, it's worth a quick check at estransit.com before travel, but the standing Town-wide rule is: leashed and muzzled, welcome on almost any public transit.
Lakes Basin Trolley
The open-air trolley that loops from The Village into the Lakes Basin (with stops near most of the alpine lakes and trailheads) follows the same leash-and-muzzle rule. This route is a great way to reach hiking access points without the hassle of a car or finding parking during busy times.
Reds Meadow / Devils Postpile Shuttle
During the mandatory shuttle season (typically late June through early September), dogs can ride to Devils Postpile and Rainbow Falls as long as they're leashed and muzzled.
Panorama Gondola
During summer operating season only, well-behaved leashed dogs can ride the gondola up to the 11,053-foot summit — a good option if you'd rather hike one direction than climb the whole way up. Dogs aren't permitted on the gondola during special events, and only service animals are allowed inside the on-mountain lodges and restaurants.
