Where to Find Sushi in Mammoth Lakes

Jul 13, 2021

After a day adventuring in the mountains, you’ll definitely have an appetite for a good meal. Craving sushi? Mammoth Lakes might be located in the mountains, but with fresh fish deliveries a few times per week you can still get your sushi fix. Here are our favorite spots to belly up to the sushi bar.

The Bistro East

Located inside the Snowcreek Athletic Club, The Bistro East is easy to miss, but definitely worth a visit. With locally acclaimed Chef Dave Morris running the show, the sushi is arguably the best in Mammoth Lakes. You don’t have to be a member of the athletic club to eat here and with other Japanese inspired menu items like miso soup, teriyaki chicken skewers, and shitake mushrooms stuffed with snow crab and scallops, there is something for all appetites.

Try the house specialty alpenglow roll with shrimp tempura, mango, and cucumber and topped with blackened tuna, sriracha, and lime juice. Or go for the poke salad with assorted sashimi tossed in a citrus vinaigrette with Maui onions, sesame seeds, and artisan greens.

Happy hour specials, including a hand roll and beer for $6, are offered daily from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.

Sushi Rei

With modern décor, mountain photography, and a street-front location in The Village at Mammoth, Sushi Rei is Mammoth’s most happening sushi bar and Asian-fusion restaurant. Try the house specialty mesa roll, which is three rolls in one (note: this roll requires extra time to prepare). Small plates — ahi tostadas, shrimp dumplings and more — are great for sharing. Or order dinner from the hot menu, featuring Korean BBQ short ribs and yellow Thai shrimp curry.

Craft cocktails and specialty sake-infused cocktails are the perfect pairings for your meal. The crouching tiger, made with mango vodka, mango puree, serrano, lime juice and a chili sugar rim, and the lychee martini are visitor favorites.

Check the website for regular specials including Tuesday night three-course specials for couples, daily happy hour specials from 4 to 5 pm and late-night specials from 9 to 10 pm.

Perhaps the most popular sushi special in town is half-off Mondays at the Whitebark Restaurant, Bar & Lounge, located inside the Westin Monache Resort. Order a chef’s choice sashimi plate with a variety of fish including salmon, ahi tuna, albacore and yellowtail to start. Then choose a main course from the dinner menu at the grill. From appetizers such as fried calamari and spicy shishito peppers to a variety of delicious main course options, a meal at Whitebark is always a treat. The restaurant also has a full bar and a kid’s menu.

Half-off sushi is available from 5 to 10 pm on Monday evenings. Daily happy hour specials are also available in the lounge from 3 to 6 pm.
