Elevation: Mammoth Gay Ski Week

The Twenty-Third Annual Mammoth Gay Ski Week returns to the High Sierras and Mammoth Lakes, California. Their core mission remains the same after 23 years: “2,500 riders. 12 major parties. 0 attitude.”

What it is: This annual spring skiing event brings together skiing, riding, entertainment, and community in one of the most vibrant weeks of the season.

Pond Skim

One of Mammoth Lakes’ most iconic spring traditions, Pond Skim marks the playful shift from winter to spring on the mountain. Spring Break meets snow sports in this high-energy celebration at Canyon Lodge.

What it is: Participants, often in wild costumes, attempt to ski or snowboard across a 100+ foot pond, creating one of the most entertaining and photographed events of the season.

Participants and spectators alike don festive outfits: neon gear, swimsuits, and inflatable props are common, and gather for a day of pure entertainment.

If you’re determined to participate in the competition, bring your costume A-game and head to Canyon Lodge early. Only the first 50 people in line secure a coveted spot, and only costumed hopefuls make the cut.

Not into hurling yourself into freezing water? Spectating is just as fun. The first run begins at 2 pm, followed by a massive celebration at the Canyon Beach Bar. Festive attire is highly encouraged.

Opening Day of Fishing Season in Mono County

Opening Day of Fishing Season, locally known as “Fishmas,” is a beloved Eastern Sierra spring tradition held on the last Saturday of April each year, marking the seasonal return to favorite fishing waters.

What it is: This annual milestone draws anglers from across the region to celebrate the start of the traditional spring fishing season in Mono County.

Then join other Eastern Sierra anglers for the first day back out at your favorite seasonal spots. Each Memorial Day Weekend, Mammoth Lakes hosts five days of independent narratives, documentaries, and shorts produced by well-known and up-and-coming names in the film industry.
