Fishing Sherwin Lakes

The trailhead for Sherwin Lakes is just outside of town off Sherwin Creek Road. A somewhat steep set of switchbacks brings you to the first lake, with a 2.5-mile hike that rewards you with unforgettable views of Mammoth Lakes and the Long Valley Caldera below.

There are two primary fishable Sherwin Lakes, both known for holding healthy populations of rainbow and brook trout.

Fishing Valentine Lake

The lake sees far less traffic, offering a quieter and more immersive fishing experience.

Getting There

From the town of Mammoth Lakes, follow Old Mammoth Road to Sherwin Creek Road, which soon turns to dirt. The road leads to the Sherwin Creek Campground and Picnic Area.

To the west of the campground is a small dirt lot marked for trailhead parking for Sherwin Lakes. East of the campground is the alternate trail to Valentine Lake.

For anglers exploring multiple areas, these lakes are often included as part of a broader fishing in Mammoth Lakes experience.

Sherwin and Valentine Lakes are great places to cast for brook and rainbow trout. When conditions are right, it can be fairly easy to catch a few aggressive brookies at either lake.

Know Before You Go

Both trailheads are accessed via a dirt road, and the lakes sit at elevations well above 8,000 feet.

Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions with proper clothing layers, sun protection, and plenty of hydration. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife—never approach, provoke, or feed animals.
