Mammoth Mountain
Overview
Mammoth Mountain is unquestionably one of the finest Alpine Skiing Mountain in the world. An average of over 400 inches (33 feet) of snow falls onto the 11,053 foot summit, making the entire 3,500 plus acres of skiable terrain enjoyable for all. Choose from heart-pumping steep chutes, wide open bowls, tree skiing, bumps, gullies, or wide open, well-groomed trails. Constantly upping the bar, the Unbound Parks have made it a point to keep features new every season. Camps and lessons ensure you make the most of the mountain at any skill level.
Geologically, this iconic peak is a lava dome complex perched on the southwest rim of the Long Valley Caldera. However, despite that proximity, it is fed by its own entirely separate magma system deep underground, making it distinctly independent from the Caldera itself. Built over hundreds of thousands of years through at least 25 overlapping volcanic eruptions, the mountain's most recent magmatic activity occurred around 57,000 years ago (which is extremely recent in geologic time!). It remains restless today: a magma intrusion in 1989 triggered CO2 emissions that have slowly killed trees near Horseshoe Lake, a phenomenon still monitored by the USGS.
