Overview
“…sharp and funny. Gunderson taps into a buoyant spirit…the touching ‘barbaric yawp’ (Whitman’s phrase) of these two deeply engaging kids.” -The Washington Post
I and You is a play about two teenagers that would ordinarily never meet but under unique circumstances are forced together. It's also a play about a 150 year old poem by Walt Whitman. But mostly it's a play about how beautiful seemingly small things - brief encounters, strange connections - can be. The play hums to the cool rhythm of jazz and pulses to Jerry Lee Lewis. The play is a funny, provoking, poignant story that celebrates the extraordinary gift of human connection. And also, there's a mystery so you'll have to come see it to find out! It's no wonder, Lauren Gunderson after Shakespeare, is the most produced playwright in America. Author of over 20 plays, Lauren has received the coveted Lanford Wilson Award at the Dramatists Guild Awards and two Steinberg/ATCA New Play Awards. Her signature play I and You was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and Winner of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award in 2014.
