McGee Canyon
Overview
McGee Canyon is one of the Eastern Sierra's most visually dramatic glacial valleys, carved by Ice Age glaciers into a classic U-shape and framed by brilliantly colored cliffs of red, orange, yellow, and purple. These hues come from ancient marine sediments laid down over 250 million years ago on an ancient ocean floor, later compressed, heated, and transformed into marble, quartzite, and slate deep within the earth. The glaciers that carved the canyon retreated about 20,000 years ago (which is extremely recent in geologic time!), leaving behind McGee Creek and sweeping lateral moraines still visible from Highway 395.
Please note: McGee Canyon is temporarily closed due to wildfire.
