Where does this data come from?
All visitation data is provided by Datafy, a tourism analytics company that works with destination marketing organizations across the United States. Datafy sources anonymized geolocation data from over 150 million active users a month using high-quality data partners from more than 1,000 apps within its dataset. All data is 100% opt-in — meaning devices are only included when users have consented to location data sharing. No personally identifiable information is ever collected or stored.
Does this track individual people?
No. No individual is ever identified in this data. All analysis is performed at an aggregate level, meaning the data reflects groups of visitors — not any specific person. Datafy is SOC 2 certified and operates in full compliance with applicable privacy regulations. Data reflects visitors who traveled to Mammoth Lakes from at least 75 miles away. Mammoth Lakes Tourism uses this data to better understand our community and make more informed decisions.
How current is the data?
The dashboard updates weekly. See the “last updated” note at the top of the page for the current data date.
Why does the data focus on Mammoth Lakes and not the broader area?
This dashboard is designed to reflect the Mammoth Lakes visitor experience specifically. Mono County as a whole covers a much larger and more varied geography — including communities with different visitor profiles. By focusing on the Mammoth Lakes area, the data is more accurate and relevant to this community.
Who pays for this?
The dashboard is funded by Mammoth Lakes Tourism through lodging tax revenues, which also funds local destination services and community programs in Mammoth Lakes.
Total Trips Defined
The estimated number of individual visits to Mammoth Lakes during the reporting period. A single visitor making two separate trips counts as two trips.
Visitor Days Defined
An estimate of the total number of days spent in Mammoth Lakes by all visitors combined. A visitor staying 3 nights contributes 4 visitor days. This reflects the total volume of tourism activity in our community, not just the number of people who showed up.
Average Length of Stay Defined
The average number of days spent per trip. Mammoth Lakes is a destination market and virtually all visitors in this data are overnight guests making a deliberate multi-day trip.
Repeat vs. One-Time Visitors Defined
A visitor is counted as “repeat” if their device has been observed in Mammoth Lakes more than once since our data began in 2018. For example, someone who first visited in 2019 and returned in 2024 counts as a repeat visitor. A “one-time” visitor is one whose device has only been observed here once in that period.
Top Markets (DMA) Defined
DMA stands for Designated Market Area. This is how cities and surrounding regions are grouped into metro areas. The Top Markets visual shows which metro areas send the most visitors to Mammoth Lakes.
Visitor Demographics Defined
Age, household income, and household size are sourced from U.S. Census and American Community Survey (ACS) data, linked to the neighborhood where each visitor’s device is registered as their home. This reflects the household profile of the communities our visitors come from, not personal information about any individual visitor.
