The One That Got Away

“So, I was asked to raise a couple fish for the annual trout fishing competition. I grew them for an extra year, and they were some of the biggest I’d seen. Under cover of darkness, I slipped them into the lakes in the night before the tournament began. Eventually all the beasts were caught… except one 21-pound monster. Is it still out there? It’s possible. The real question is… how big is he today?”

Tree Friends

“I call them “tree friends.” They’re the ones that you recognize every time you’re on a favorite run or hike, the ones you have a silent conversation with every time you pass them, ‘Good to see you again, friend.’”

Racing The Sun

“The snow was unbelievable—crystalline, dry and light. It floated around us as we skied through it, sparkling with starlight reflections. It was magic.”

Mountain Healing

“A young man came in one day and said, “I want to go skiing.” The problem was, he was a quadriplegic attached to a battery-packed medical ventilator. He wasn’t going to quit, so neither were we.”

Alpine Zen

“I remember it like it was yesterday. My little legs had been walking for an eternity on a hot, dusty trail when the path opened up to it: an enormous alpine meadow, beautiful and arresting. I stood and took it all in, a square mile filled with little blue lakes and popping flowers under a blue blanket of a sky. It may have been one tiny moment, but it was a massive, spiritual and wholly immersive experience I’ll never forget.”

The Perfect Hiking Trip

A Lunar Journey

“It was 20 miles on horseback through Mammoth Lakes wilderness in nothing but moonlight… all just to get to a TV. It was the summer of ’69, and I made it just in time to watch the lander touch down on that very same moon. I’ve never looked at the moon the same.”

Irresistible Adventure

“It felt like I was being pulled toward the cliff. Like I didn’t have a choice. Something was telling me, “You’re gonna do this.” I just let my inner instincts take over and hit the jump perfectly. I was flying. When I landed, the powder exploded around me and I was grinning ear to ear.”

All About Mammoth Mountain

The Escape

“I take in all of Arrowhead Lake: the granite rocks where kids jump off into the water, the dogs splashing in the shimmering blue, the view down to town, down to reality. You’re there, but you’re not there. It’s true escape.”

Scaling the Crystal Castle

“I dug my crampons in and started climbing the frozen waterfall. And just like that, I was in the middle of what felt like a crystal castle. It was pure magic.”

Otherwordly

“I was on a normal run when the trail took me to Hot Creek. It felt like I was on a completely different planet… and I was the only one there.”

Explore Hot Creek

Written in Stone

“You can stand here, in the mountains, with these Paleozoic rocks—400 million year old ocean sediments that used to be at the bottom of the ancient Pacific Ocean. It’s a geologic wonderland that we may never have a full understanding of.”

Mono Lake Magic

Unaltered Wonder

“It’s spiritual in a way, when you know you’re at the basic beginning of life. It’s pure. It’s a little metaphysical, walking the same trail people walked eons ago, with no trace or impact of mankind. We’re so lucky these lands have been set aside for us to enjoy.”
