Chain Control Information

It is not uncommon for travel conditions in and around the Mammoth Lakes area to vary significantly, not only between the desert and the mountains, but literally from mile to mile on the same road. CalTrans officials urge you to check road conditions often. To access California road, weather and construction information please call CalTrans at 800-427-7623 (800-GAS-ROAD) or www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi
or www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/conditions/north_report.htm for Current Regional Road Conditions.

Nevada roads are also affected by weather and construction continually throughout the year. To access Nevada road, weather and construction please call 877-687-6237 or www.nevadadot.com/traveler/roads.

Always carry chains. Make sure they are the proper size for your tires and are in working order. Chains must be installed on the drive wheels. Make sure you know if your vehicle is front or rear wheel drive. You may want to use the services of a chain installer.

There are three different chain control categories for communication to the public the degree of hazard present on snow and ice covered roadways. The chain control categories are:

R1 = CHAINS OR SNOWTIRES REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4WD

R2 = CHAINS ON ALL VECHICLES EXCEPT 4WD WITH SNOW TIRES

R3 = CHAINS ON ALL VEHICLES, NO EXCEPTIONS

Because of the huge snowfalls and the need to remove snow from the roads, there is virtually no permitted parking on any town roads during the winter months from Nov.1st to April 30th. For further clarification about a particular parking area call the Mammoth Lakes Police Department during business office hours at 760-934-2011 ext. 0
