Campgrounds in Mammoth Lakes

Ready to sleep under the stars? Avid campers will find a variety of options for camping in and around Mammoth Lakes - including campgrounds, RV parks and, of course, the area's backcountry wilderness. Popular places to pitch a tent include scenic spots like Twin Lakes Campground, which offers plenty of opportunities for fishing and boating as well, Camp High Sierra, which has been around since 1921, and New Shady Rest, which is situated beneath a dense canopy of pine trees. But, no matter how you prefer to camp, some of the finest campsites in the West can be found here.

Camping Basics

In developed recreation areas - including Convict Lake, Reds Meadow, the Town of Mammoth Lakes and the Mammoth Lakes Basin - camping is permitted only in developed campgrounds. Developed campsites are usually non-electric, and include amenities such as picnic tables, fire pits, bear-proof lockers and access to restrooms and water. On busy summer weekends, campgrounds fill to capacity, especially those at lake and streamside locations. Make reservations in advance or be sure to arrive early. You can find more information about campgrounds in the listings on this page.

Backcountry Camping

There are thousands of acres of wilderness beyond the town, including areas within the Inyo National Forest, that are eligible for more experienced campers to immerse themselves in natural beauty and adventure. For backcountry and wilderness camping permits, fire permits, dispersed camping information and other camping options in the Inyo National Forest, call 760-873-2408 or stop by the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center.
Some sites can also be reserved online through recreation.gov or call 877-444-6777.
